The hiring trends manufacturing employers are dealing with in 2026 look different from the broader labor-market headlines. Aerospace and manufacturing companies are still competing for skilled engineers and technical talent, but the challenge is increasingly about finding people with the right experience, keeping them interested through the process, and moving quickly enough to avoid losing them.
For plant managers, HR leaders, and executives, that creates a hiring environment where a prolonged vacancy can put pressure on existing teams, production schedules, and projects that depend on specialized expertise.
Where Things Stand Right Now
Aerospace and manufacturing remain major parts of the US economy, and both continue to support substantial technical workforces.
The Aerospace Industries Association reported that the aerospace and defense industry generated more than $1 trillion in sales in 2025 and supported more than 2.1 million American jobs.1 That scale helps explain why competition for experienced engineering and technical talent remains significant.
Manufacturing is also maintaining a large workforce. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that more than 12.8 million people worked in manufacturing in 2024. While overall manufacturing employment is projected to remain relatively stable through 2034, BLS expects nearly 1 million openings in production occupations each year, largely because workers leave these occupations through retirement or move into other fields.2
For employers, that creates a steady need to replace experienced workers even when total industry employment isn't growing rapidly.
The Skilled-Talent Gap Isn't Closing
The challenge becomes more specific when companies move beyond general manufacturing positions and start looking for people with specialized engineering or technical experience.
Experience is becoming harder to replace. Deloitte estimates that US manufacturers could need as many as 3.8 million new employees between 2024 and 2033, with approximately 1.9 million positions potentially going unfilled if workforce challenges continue. The same report points to a separate finding from NAM's Q1 2024 outlook survey: 65 percent of manufacturers ranked attracting and retaining talent as their top business challenge.3
The demand is not limited to production-floor positions. The National Association of Manufacturers' fourth-quarter 2025 outlook found that 33.5 percent of manufacturers needed high-skilled, degreed workers such as scientists, researchers, and engineers. Another 72.1 percent reported needing skilled production workers.4
Whatever the level, the person filling the role usually needs to bring specific knowledge of a manufacturing process, regulatory environment, quality standard, or technical platform, not just a general engineering background. That's a narrower pool than most companies expect to be searching in.
What's Changed in Candidate Expectations
Candidates have always evaluated compensation and long-term career opportunities. Increasingly, they're also weighing how the opportunity is presented and how much friction exists in the hiring process itself.
1. The role needs to be clear.
Experienced engineers and manufacturing professionals generally know what their skills are worth. Most likely, they’ll be looking to evaluate responsibilities, reporting structure, technology, production environment, and opportunity for advancement alongside compensation.
A job description that simply lists requirements may not give a strong candidate enough reason to engage.
Be clear about what the person will own, who they will work with, and what success should look like. That gives candidates a better basis for deciding whether the opportunity makes sense for them.
2. Compensation needs to reflect the market.
For specialized positions, market data can help set a realistic starting point. BLS's 2024 median pay of $134,830 for aerospace engineers, for example, provides a useful benchmark for employers hiring into that particular discipline.5
The right compensation will depend on experience, location, responsibilities, and the specific technical requirements of the position. The important part is knowing where the offer sits before the search gets underway.

Where the Delays Are Happening
A position doesn’t just stay open due to a lack of candidates. Sometimes the hiring process itself creates the delay.
1. The search starts without a clear definition of the role.
If HR, operations, and engineering leaders have different ideas about what the new hire needs to accomplish, candidates can be evaluated against changing expectations.
Before opening the search, define:
- The technical experience the role requires
- The responsibilities that belong to the position
- Which qualifications are essential versus preferred
- Who the person will report to
- What success should look like in the first year
2. Interview decisions take too long.
Strong candidates may not remain available while a company schedules multiple interviews, gathers feedback, and waits for approval.
The longer the process takes, the greater the chance that a candidate accepts another opportunity.
To help eliminate unnecessary back-and-forth, give interviewers clear evaluation criteria before interviews begin and establish who has decision-making responsibility.
3. The company relies only on active applicants.
Posting an opening and waiting for applications can work for some positions. It becomes more limiting when the company needs specialized engineering or manufacturing experience.
Experienced professionals may not be actively searching when the position becomes available. Reaching those candidates requires a more targeted approach.
