Recruiter Red Flags: 5 Things That Can Tell You If a Recruiter Is Actually Going to Help You

If you’re working with a recruiter or even just thinking about it, look for these 5 red flags to tell if they’re actually going to help you.

1. The recruiter is asking you for money (as a candidate).

Recruiters these days don’t ask candidates for money. We are paid by the companies that hire our candidates.

2. You can’t get ahold of them.

A good recruiter will work with you on your schedule, not just on their schedule. They should be available outside of standard working hours, so you don’t have to take time off your current job to speak with them.

3. They don’t take the time to listen and understand your needs.

A good recruiter will only send you jobs or candidates that are a direct fit for what you’re looking for.

4. They don’t dig deeper than the job description.

Whether you’re a candidate or a hiring manager, recruiters should be asking questions about your needs that go beyond what’s on paper.

5. They don’t work with urgency.

You should have regular updates from your recruiter on the status of your search for candidates or your next position. They should be transparent about what stage the hiring process is in and the progress that they’ve made.
